Year 5 Sea Turtles

Pond Dipping

Parent information for Y5 Sex and Relationship Lessons 

Over the next two weeks, children in Sea Turtles Class will have several lessons about growing up and relationships. These lessons will be taught using the Twinkl scheme of learning through Science and PSHE.  

 

The lessons will recap the information that the children covered in Year 4 and go further to learn about:

Objectives we will recap in more detail:

  • How our bodies change as we grow up: 
    • Body hair 
    • Sweat more and greasy hair (importance of hygiene, washing regularly and deodorant)  
    • Spots 
  • Emotional changes and mood swings (including how to manage these emotions and where to seek advice and support)

 

New objectives we will cover:

  • Puberty, including specific changes for boys and girls as they grow older. 
  • Similarities and differences between how boys and girls experience puberty.
  • Menstruation

Raging Rivers

We will be learning about rivers and how to create accurate maps. We will learn how to create a sketch map of the local area and use symbols to make a sketch map of Little Eaton. 

 

Animals, including Humans

We will be learning about life cycles of humans and animals. The average life expectancy of humans and animals. We will also be learning about puberty in boys and girls and the changings that happen during this time. 

Earth and Space

We will be learning about the Earth and Space this half term in Science. This includes a trip to the National Space Centre on 24th April 2023. We will be learning about the planets, moon phases, key individuals in space, the Space Race, and more!

Inventors 

This half term we will be looking at significant inventors that have impacted the world. This will include looking at: Thomas Edison, Tim Berners-Lee, Alexander Graham Bell and more! 

 

 

Cromford Mill

History On Our Doorstep

We will be learning about how the Industrial Revolution impacted Derbyshire. This will include learning about the industrial revolution timeline, mills, children working in mills, transport systems such as canal boats and steam engines and more! We will be going on a trip to Cromford Mill on 20th March 2023. 

 

Forces

In Science, we will be learning about Forces. This will involve learning about gravity, magnetism, water resistance, air resistance, and friction. This will involve learning through investigation and developing our knowledge. 

Antarctica!

We are going to be learning about Antarctica this half term. We will be covering: what it is like there; the climate; who Ernest Shackleton is; which animals and plants can live there; global warming and more! 

We will also be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. This will involve looking at places where different living animals live. It will also include learning about plants.

Cadburys World

Ancient Maya 

We will be learning about the Ancient Mayan Civilisation. This will involve learning about their way of life, jobs, food, number systems, masks, Mayan gods, where they lived and so much more!

We will also be going on a trip to Cadbury's World on 14th December 2022. We will go on a tour of Cadbury World, which features the Maya’s involvement in the early history of cocoa in c.AD 900.

We will also be making our Christmas Cushions this half term, so keep your eyes on our class page to see some pictures of our great sewing!

Swimming will continue from

 Monday 7th November 2022

 

Reminders about kit:

Swim wear:     

  • Girls – a one piece costume. Bikinis/tankinis can ride up.
  • Boys - shorts above the knee so as not to restrict movement/drag them down.

Jewellery:  All jewellery to be removed and left at home or school. Earrings can stick into the back of the ear; fall out in the water; etc.

Hair: All long hair (both boys and girls) must be tied back to stop hair restricting vision. The recommendation is to wear a swimming cap.

Goggles: Goggles are the pupils’ responsibility. They need to fit correctly and know how to put them on. They will be asked to take them off for some activities at times.
