Participation Responsibility Independence Determination Excellence

Welcome to our school - full of happy, hard-working children and teachers. We want every child to participate fully, respect other people, be independent and determined in achieving excellence.

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5! We are extremely excited for the year ahead and I can tell the children are too. They’ve settled brilliantly into their new classroom and surroundings – I can tell that they’ll be lots of determined, respectful learning taking place and memories being made this year. I (Miss Stevenson) will be teaching this year and we have Miss Gascoyne, Miss Holland and Mrs Warren working alongside the children.

USA Road Trip

For our first topic, we will be taking a road trip around the USA. We will be

focusing our drive on North America, looking at the human and physical features of this continent as we take our road trip. We will stop at Yellowstone and
explore this National Park in greater detail: looking at the volcanic land, the
geysers, prismatic spring and the indigenous animals. We will then arrive back in Derbyshire, where we will explore the Peak District; comparing this to
Yellowstone. It will be a road trip to remember!

Weekly Routines

Monday – Reading journals checked and homework in

– We can see how much the children are reading outside of school. Our expectation is reading twenty minutes 5 times a week. Bedtime is a great time of day to get your daily reads in; it will help you switch off from your day and become a great part of your routine!

  • Homework will be checked by an adult. Please note if your child needs a little extra support from us in school on the homework.

Wednesday – Homework sent home in folders and PE day. A maths and English task will be set each week. An overview of the spelling rules for the term will be put at the start of each folder too.

Friday - spelling test will be administered. Children will practise a rule and words in school over the week and have an informal test each Friday.

*Please note that spelling and homework routines will commence the week beginning the 11th of September.*

Handy information for this HALF TERM

PE will be on a Wednesday with Miss Stevenson. We will start off with our

Athletics unit. Please can children ensure they have sensible footwear as we aim to be outside, weather permitting.

Forest School Thursday afternoon. Children will be split into two groups,
with each group alternating every half term. If children have received a
letter, then they are in the first group and will be
participating this half term. They will need to bring a bag of clothes
(stated in the letter) to change into at dinner time. The other half of the
class will be doing group or individual target work with Miss Stevenson, followed by French with Mrs Schumann. They will switch after the
     half term holiday.

I look forward to getting to know the children and meeting you all over the next few weeks. If you want to introduce yourselves or ask any questions, please just drop by at the end of the day.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Miss Stevenson

Please join us for a 2024 September starters open evening on Thursday 19th October 4.30pm-6.00pm. All welcome.
