sKIDS Study

Dear Parents/Carers,

There has been a date change to the sKIDDsPlus-22 and it will now take place on the last day of term (Friday 8th of April). Registration is available until the 6th of April, so please sign up before then if you wish your child to take part. The original letter from Public Health England is below and contains details for registering.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA, formerly Public Health England) has been monitoring COVID-19 cases in children since the start of the pandemic. You can see all the work that we do on childhood COVID-19 here: COVID-19: paediatric surveillance - GOV.UK ( Your school may already have taken part in our studies looking at COVID-19 infections and antibodies last year.

We now have a COVID-19 variant called Omicron which is causing a large number of people to become infected across England, but many children have already had COVID-19 and we also have vaccines which help protect against COVID-19.

Since all children have now returned to school in January 2022, we are interested in understanding the risk of students catching COVID-19 and how it is spreading in primary and secondary schools. The information we collect will help provide important information needed to keep students and staff safely in school.

We are writing to ask if your child aged between 5 and 15 years (excluding those in school year 11) would like to take part in this new study. Taking part will involve completing a short online questionnaire and providing a blood sample and, in some schools, an oral fluid (saliva) sample in March 2022, and then at the end of the summer term (June/July 2022) and in the autumn term of the next academic year. We will let you and your school know when the third final blood sample will be taken closer to the time. If your child will be at a different school next school-year we would still like them to participate in the first two sampling rounds. The blood samples will be taken in school by doctors, nurses and staff who are experienced in taking samples from children. All children will be offered local anaesthetic (numbing) cream before having their blood test. We will report the results of your child’s antibody tests when they become available.

What should I do next?

Please follow the link below which gives more information about the study and, if you wish your child to take part, please complete the online consent form and short questionnaire using the link or QR code at the end of this letter. Please ask us if there is anything that is not clear
